Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Keller, TX
Comfortable, Safe Extraction with a Team You Can Trust
If your wisdom teeth are starting to cause discomfort, pressure, or dental complications, it may be time to consider removal. At Pickett Family Dental, we work closely with a trusted oral surgeon to ensure that your wisdom teeth extraction is performed safely and with as little stress as possible.
Our goal is to keep you comfortable throughout the entire process—from your first consultation through recovery—while protecting the health of your surrounding teeth and gums.
When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually begin to emerge between the ages of 15 and 25. While some people have enough room in their mouths to accommodate them, many do not. In these cases, wisdom teeth can grow in at an angle, become impacted (trapped under the gums), or crowd the surrounding teeth, leading to pain and long-term complications.
We may recommend wisdom teeth removal if:
-
Your mouth doesn’t have enough space for the teeth to erupt properly
-
The teeth are impacted, stuck under the gum or against other teeth
-
They are coming in at a wrong angle, potentially damaging nearby teeth
-
You’re developing cavities or gum infection in the area
-
You’ve had jaw pain, swelling, or repeated headaches linked to the eruption
Using dental X-rays and a full exam, Dr. Tyson Pickett, DDS FAGD will evaluate your situation and determine if extraction is the right step. Our priority is preventing pain, crowding, or future orthodontic issues before they start.
Wisdom Teeth Removal (Extraction): What to Expect
Before your wisdom teeth extraction Dr. Pickett and the oral surgeon will discuss any underlying health problems you have, go over your current medications, and help answer any questions you have about you surgery. Next, we’ll discuss the anesthesia options that you have available to you and you can check out our sedation options as well.
What to Expect Before Wisdom Teeth Removal
Your comfort and safety are always our top priority. Before your procedure, Dr. Pickett and our oral surgeon will take the time to:
-
Review your medical history and current medications
-
Answer any questions you have about the surgery and recovery
-
Explain the sedation options available to keep you calm and pain-free during treatment
We encourage patients to plan ahead for a smoother experience. This includes arranging transportation, child or pet care, and taking time off work or school as needed for the initial recovery period.
While most people recover quickly, you may want to take the day off from school or work, and possibly a couple more depending on your needs. Be sure to plan out child care, pet care, or a ride home prior to your wisdom teeth extraction appointment.

So, what happens when you have your wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth removal is quick and you should be in and out within 45 minutes as soon as you’re sedation begins working. The dental surgeon will remove the teeth, stitch you up, and you’ll have some bleeding holes for a couple days.
Make sure to check out what to do if you have sensitive teeth after wisdom teeth extraction on one of our past articles.
The Day of Surgery: What Happens?
Wisdom teeth removal is typically a quick outpatient procedure, often completed in under 45 minutes, depending on the number of teeth and their position. Once your sedation takes effect, the surgeon will:
-
Gently access the area through the gum
-
Remove the wisdom teeth (sometimes in sections if needed)
-
Clean the site and place stitches if necessary
-
Monitor your recovery before releasing you home with aftercare instructions
You’ll be resting at home the same day with gauze packs in place to manage bleeding and swelling.
Recovery and Aftercare
While recovery experiences vary, most patients begin feeling significantly better within a few days. Expect mild swelling, tenderness, and limited jaw movement during the first 24–72 hours. You’ll be given post-operative instructions that include:
-
Tips for managing swelling and discomfort
-
Guidelines on what to eat and drink (think soft foods and hydration)
-
How to care for the extraction site to avoid complications like dry socket
We also recommend skipping physical activity and talking too much during the first couple days to avoid disturbing the healing process.
Our team will be available if you have any concerns during your recovery, and we’ll schedule a follow-up if needed to ensure everything is healing properly.
Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Not necessarily. Some patients may have wisdom teeth that come in straight and healthy, with no risk of crowding. However, these cases are less common. Many people experience problems even before their wisdom teeth fully erupt.
Early evaluation is key. By removing wisdom teeth before they cause pain or crowding, we can protect your long-term oral health and prevent future complications.
